It’s quite the adventure to visit the historic Hundraðmannahellir (“The Cave of the Hundred”), which is located north of Hamarsvegur by the 12th hole of the Vestmannaeyjar golf course.

The name refers to the events of the Turkish invasion of 1627, and the story goes that about 100 people hid in the cave from the pirates who abducted around 300 people from Vestmannaeyjar. Unfortunately, luck was not on their side as a dog sniffing around the cave alerted the pirates to the group’s hiding spot.

The cave is long and has a rather low ceiling. It’s not possible to walk in, instead you have to crawl a short distance to get to the main cavern deepest inside the cave. It’s more spacious there and a few people can fit at once, though certainly not a hundred!
